Collaborative Research Centres (SFB; "Sonderforschnugsbereiche") are long-term research facilities at universities designed for up to twelve years where scientists work together across disciplines and universities in one research programme.
They offer the chance to work on innovative, demanding, elaborate and long-term research projects through the coordination and concentration of people and resources at the applicant universities. Thus, they contribute to the institutional priority setting and structure formation.
The CRC 287 supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) was established by researchers from the Ruhr-University Bochum and the Otto-von-Guerike University Magdeburg. The goal of this CRC is to explore the interaction of physical and chemical processes in reacting and moving dense particle systems passed by a gaseous fluid. The groups of Profs. Wiedner and Fritsch use their knowledge of constructing hadron physics detectors to develop a positron-emitter-tomography-like scanner around the bulk system that allows a non-invasive tracking of individual particles and the gas distribution itself.
Within the SFB 1316, the PIs Prof. Czarnetzki, Dr. Luggenhölscher, Prof. von Keudell, Dr. Schulz-von der Gathen and Dr. Böke from our faculty are involved. These projects study the electric fields in short-pulse plasmas and the non-equilibrium excitation of molecules. Furthermore, we investigate plasma arrays and the functionalisation of catalytic surfaces using combined plasmas and lasers as well as plasmas at the solid-liquid boundary.

Our faculty participates in the SFB TR 87 with the four PIs Prof. von Keudell, Dr. Schulz-von der Gathen, Dr. Böke and Dr. Prenzel. These projects study the dynamics of pulsed magnetised plasmas, fundamental processes at the plasma-solid boundary and the synthesis of barriers and membranes via PECVD procedures. Furthermore, we supervise the public project of the SFB TR.

In CIM, we will address the following key research questions:
